Serving the environment: LAU Saxony-Anhalt keeps an eye on radioactivity

IMG_8076

As an accredited laboratory, the Saxony-Anhalt State Office for Environmental Protection (LAU) can meet the requirements of DIN ISO 17025 with the help of the Radioactivity Management and Information System (RaMIS) from GUS LAB GmbH. In addition, the sample run is automated to the greatest possible extent in both routine and intensive measurement operations.

Tailored to the sensitivity of the environment

The experts in the Environmental Radioactivity/Radiation Protection Department of the Saxony-Anhalt State Office for Environmental Protection ( LAU) know best how complex radioactivity monitoring is and what it means for the environment. Their task is to monitor man-made radioactive substances throughout the state for the precautionary protection of the population. In accordance with the routine measurement program, samples are examined for their content of radionuclides. Radioactivity is determined in foodstuffs, drinking water and groundwater, wastewater and waste, as well as in soil and plants, among other things.

In the event of a possible hazardous situation, action must be taken quickly - an efficient monitoring system is indispensable. Here, as well as in routine cases, the Radioactivity Management and Information System(RaMIS) is used. In accordance with the required measurement programs, it is used to automatically record samples and transfer the measured values from various measuring devices to RaMIS via LAF files, which is particularly important in the event of radioactive incidents.

Validated measured values are made available from RaMIS to IMIS and thus to the federal control centers so that a continuous assessment of the radiological situation can be ensured. The master data available in IMIS can equally be imported to RaMIS and used.

Quality-assured tracking of the workflow

As an accredited laboratory, the Saxony-Anhalt State Office for Environmental Protection is able to meet the requirements of DIN ISO 17025 for quality-assured documented tracking of sample processing (from sample receipt to validated measured value) with the help of the RaMIS radioactivity management and information system.

In addition, sample throughput is optimized as far as possible in both routine and intensive measurement operations, enabling LAU staff to react quickly in the event of an incident and avert potential hazards.

Advantages for people and the environment

The LAU Saxony-Anhalt benefits from the following advantages by means of RaMIS:

  • Sample runs in routine and intensive measurement operations are mapped automatically and error-free
  • Workflows are made more efficient
  • The determined data are smoothly transmitted to IMIS and thus to the responsible central office of the federal government.

Employees of the LAU Saxony-Anhalt confirm that the requirements for quality-assured tracking of sample processing can be met without much effort with the help of RaMIS. Above all, people and their environment benefit from this efficiency.
